Thessaloniki ex-major gets life sentence

A Greek court sentenced the former mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, close friend of today’s pri-minister and member of ND(New Democracy party)  to life in prison  for embezzling millions of euros from the municipal budget of the largest city in the northern part of Greece.

Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, 66, was mayor of Thessaloniki in northern Greece from 1999 to 2010. A former champion sprinter and a dentist by profession, which earned him the nickname “Flying Doctor,” Mr. Papageorgopoulos also served for 17 years as a lawmaker for the conservative New Democracy party and a short stint as deputy sports minister.
