EU citizens arrested while ‘photographing frogs’ in restricted border area

Police have arrested five foreign nationals from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany on the border with Turkish on charges of illegally entering a restricted border area.

The five said they were merely seeking to photograph frogs.

The two Dutchmen, aged 37 and 24, two Belgians aged 32 and 24 and a 29-year-old German woman were arrested Wednesday morning after being spotted near the border by the Evros River in the northeast of the country, police said in a statement.

The arrest took place near the town of Feres. Police said the five will be led before a public prosecutor in the city Alexandropoulis after questioning by dectectives.

The sensitive region is a favoured route for illegal migration, used by thousands of migrants seeking to enter the European Union without visas.

East Macedonia and Thrace police spokesman Anastasios Tsiplakis said the five told police they were in the area to photograph a rare species of frog.
