After a series of peaceful demonstrations for preserving a recreational area in Istanbul city center which is planned to demolished for the construction of a shopping mall, Turkish police attacked the protesters violently with tear gas and water cannon, directly targeting their faces and bodies. Dozens of protesters are hospitalized and access to the park is blocked without any legal basis. Turkish media, directly controlled by the government or have business and political ties with it, refuse to cover the incidents. Press agencies also blocked the information flow.
In Athens, political refugee groups from Turkey and Greek left-wing organizations are calling for a demonstration in front of Turkish embassy at 5.30pm. The Turkish embassy is located at Vasilisis Sofias av. & Rigilis str.
According to Greek and international media, 4 people murdered by the police and hundreds are injured. The popular demands of the demonstrations are rather beyond the environmental destruction of the park. Women are struggling against the new law about abortions, or others for poverty and the minimum wage. The insurrection and social turbulence is today extended also in other cities such as the capital Ankara.
Turkish authorities have arrested dozens of people. At least 60 people were detained on Friday as they protested in Istanbul at a rally which began over the demolition of a park, but which turned into a broader protest against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian government.
